Design and Engineering at Vincent Metals Corporation
A customer in the automotive industry commissioned the experienced cladding services at Vincent Metals for a new wire and rod solution. We consulted with the customer to develop a new design appropriate for their application, calling upon our engineering expertise and process knowledge to determine the ideal material selections and ratios. The material was co-extruded to customer specified ratios of platinum and titanium. The properties of platinum make it an ideal material for this application; they include excellent corrosion resistance and the ability to pass current in electrolytes.
Completed rods measured 3/16”, 1/4” and 3/8” in diameter, with a platinum thickness of 188 µin or 250 µin. Metallography testing methods were implemented to verify platinum thickness, along with tensile testing, and visual inspections for quality and integrity. Turnaround time for this project was 11 weeks, with shipment to the customer in Canada. This project exceeded customer expectations, allowing them to enjoy increased cost effectiveness as the Newly designed material maintained a longer life cycle than their original product.
